Parking zones scheme shelved
A controversial residents' parking scheme has been shelved for a year
Councillors took the decision at St David's Parish Centre, Stanwell, following a plea by residents including Robert Owsianka, of Gresham Road, who urged the committee to abandon the scheme altogether.
The members agreed to a recommendation from officers to put the project on hold following a consultation with more than 3,500 residents within the proposed area.
Mr Owsianka said: "This has been the third time now that these proposals for a controlled parking zone have been put forward.
"I would ask you to abandon this whole thing, we don't want it, it is particularly clear we don't want it.
"It's costing more and more doing this consultation and it's just money wasted."
But members of the committee responded by pointing out that the scheme was brought about by public request in the first instance, and took into consideration future developments planned for Staines.
Cllr Gerry Forsbrey said: "I have taken on board what has been said. "I hope with all the developments that are going to go on in Staines in the future - including Airtrack - that when you can't park outside your own house, you will realise what we are trying to do."
Surrey County Councillor for Shepperton, Laurie Burrell, put forward a recommendation to postpone the project but suggested there should be further public consultation on zone 1 - the Bridge Street/Courage zone.
However, this was dismissed by the committee as financially unviable for just one area.
