Tesco backs down in trolley war

A ceasefire has been called in the trolley war between Tesco and Spelthorne Council in Stanwell.

Residents have become so fed up with Tesco staff in Town Lane, Ashford refusing to collect trollies littering their streets that it has become the number one issue raised at Surrey County Councillor for Stanwell Victor Agarwal's weekly surgeries.

In January Spelthorne community warden Mick Raynor counted 51 trollies on the streets in a week and assured the Herald & News it was a battle Tesco would not win.

But while Tesco previously refused to make regular collections of waylaid trollies on Stanwell's streets, last week they started a policy of rounding up the carts and promised to upgrade their system to stop shoppers taking them off site.

Cllr Agarwal said: "People are very angry because they are an eyesore and they are an easy target for yobs to push into cars and push each other around in.

"I'm pleased that we seem to be getting somewhere but I am concerned that Tesco will not do these collections frequently enough and whether they will continue doing them. I would prefer something that stops the trollies being taken out in the first place."

A spokesman for Tesco said the problem was 'incredibly frustrating for store staff' and added that if the upgrade to the trollies was not succesful, they would consider installing a coin lock system.

I appreciate the decision taken by Tesco to review its Trolley policy. We living very next to Tesco have been worse affected, and stray trolleys lying in the streets were just a danger waiting to hit someone.

I suppose it would be too much to ask that if you take a trolley out, you take it back too. I guess we'll have to have coin operated trolleys soon.
