Lorry drivers "ignoring restriction"

lorry.jpgTwenty-five years after residents begged for a lorry ban - and got one - in Stanwell Village they say the problem is worse than ever.

The disruption was highlighted in the Staines & Ashford News in October 1983 and campaigners thought they had their wish when a 7.5 tonne weight restriction was imposed.

But villagers say the signs in Park Road are continuously being ignored by heavy goods vehicle drivers whose lorries are causing endless noise, dust and disruption.

Mary Baxter, of the High Street, campaigned to have the weight restriction put in with her late husband, Eric, who protested by lying down in front a lorry in two years ago. Her cottage is right next to the road and she has even had her front gate flattened by an errant motorist.

She said: "I have tried so many times to get something done but the lorries are getting bigger and bigger and nobody is doing anything about it. It's worse than ever and we are not getting any help at all.

"They don't look at the signs and they keep on coming through here. Something will have to be done before sombody is killed here."

Beryl Wilkins, of Stanwell Residents' Association, also lives in the High Street and wants the police to start clamping down on lorry drivers.

She said: "These big lorries are still coming through. They are so long and they and they are obviously over the weight limit. It's definitely not improved since they put the signs up - there are more lorries than ever.

"I have never seen them stopped. I would like to see a few stopped and fined and then I think the word would spread."

The problem has been raised regularly at Stanwell's police surgeries and has been a neighbourhood priority for much of the last year.
