Mindless vandals broke into a council owned sports facility at the weekend and completely destroyed the place.

Representatives of Spelthorne Council have talked out at their disgust over the thousands of pounds worth of damage caused to the Long Lane Recreation Ground, off Cambria Gardens, in Stanwell.

The incident happened on Saturday (21) night where yobs pulled down parts of the ceiling of the club house, and adjoining flat, tore radiators from walls, broke sinks and baths, pulled out electrical sockets, threw poles through windows and ripped apart cupboards and doors.

The vandals also turned on the water supplies and flooded the main power cabinet.

The damage is estimated to be in the region on £40,000

Kevin Flurry, councillor for Stanwell North, said: "Quite frankly, I am absolutely furious.

We are spending a lot of money to provide facilities for the youths of Stanwell, and have almost finished putting the touches to a £100,000 refurbishment of Stanwell Moor rec.

"But then we get this unwarranted criminal damage occurring. Hopefully the police will find them."

The council issued a statement on Tuesday (24) stating they are 'appalled, angry, and distressed' at the 'wanton damage.'

It said: "The council is deeply upset at the effect it will have on young people who will be unable to play football or use the changing room facilities. In addition the flat above cannot be let."

The club is sometimes used by youth football team Staines Albion, and a cricket club.

Members of the council's Street Scene department are believed to have found the damage on Sunday and called the police.

Scene of crime offices attended and carried out forensics, and removed the evidence from the scene.

The power supply has now been turned off.

Councillor Denise Grant, cabinet member for young people and culture said: "It almost beggars belief that there are people who can do this sort of mindless and criminal damage.

"It has completely destroyed the building and ruined the opportunity for young people to play football on the ground."

The councillor added that the building was refurbished in the past year with water heaters.

Anyone who knows anything should call the police on 0845 12 2222 reference SL/09/9517.
