The Stanwell War Memorial has been granted listed status by the government.

Ben Bradshaw, secretary of state for the department of culture, media, and sport announced on Tuesday November 10 that he listed the High Street memorial in time for remembrance Sunday.

The memorial was built in 1921 after the people of Stanwell collected money for it, and news of the listing has pleased residents.

Beryle Wilkins, of High Street, said: "The people of Stanwell have been happy to revere the statue ever since it was built. It is very good news. The Stanwell Women's Institute regularly decorate it with flowers, and this year we won an award at Spelthorne in Bloom for best kept war memorial."

The memorial is built of Portland Street and stands 3.8metres high.

The base if flanked by large carved scrolls and it bears a roll of honour bearing 55 names of both World Wars.
