Spelthorne officers to move in with the council

STAINES police constables could be sharing office space with Spelthorne Council's offices by the beginning of April.

A public consultation was launched on Friday (29) to find out resident's opinions on possible station closures, but the force is currently looking at merging neighbourhood teams with the council offices, in Knowle Green, due to the cutting of the forces budget last year.

It is understand that Staines will still remain open as it holds Staines CID and a custody centre, and it is also believed that Shepperton may remain open.

The force are looking at save money and employ 200 more officers by 2012 by closing police stations, so there is the possibility that Ashford and Sunbury could close.

Councillors have also raised concerns that Spelthorne will not get as many officers as they thought, and are still trying to find out how many they will get.

Ian Beardsmore, Spelthorne councillor for Sunbury Common, and Surrey County Councillor for Sunbury Common and Ashford Common, said: "I am very concerned about Sunbury police station closing, and if it does I would certainly like to see a marked increase in officers, otherwise it will mean we lose a station and don't get any more police."

Although the Chief Constable Mark Rowley previously said officers would be re-located to shopping centres and libraries, sources inside the force have said the number of promised officers keeps going up and down.

Colin Davis, Spelthorne councillor for Staines South, said the problem lied with the governments treatment of Surrey Police.

He said: "We are inevitably not going to get as many officers as intended, but I do not blame the police for that, but the government's treatment of them over the years. We are entering difficult times here."

The news comes a a few weeks after the force signed a legal agreement with Sussex and Thames Valley police forces to create regional units to jointly cover witness protection, covert operations, and technical support

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "Staines Police Station accommodates a wide range of policing functions aside from neighbourhood policing and the current plans do not endanger the future of the station.

"In order to increase by up to 200 frontline constables, at a time of budget cuts, difficult choices need to be made which may include replacing some old police buildings which are expensive to run, in the wrong location and little used by members of the public with more accessible way to meet the police.

"However, we are committed to making no changes to police buildings until there has been local consultation and better locations for meeting neighbourhood policing teams have been put in place."
