Stanwell campaigners hope developments will be rejected

Campaigners are hoping two large developments in Stanwell will be rejected at a Spelthorne Council planning meeting on Wednesday January 6.

The two developments have been rejected before at previous meetings, and campaigners for both are furious they have been re-submitted and said they feel there is little difference between the two.

The first development is the building of 14 1-3 bedroom dwellings on Stanwell Village Hall car park in the High Street and the second is a proposal to build seven two storey buildings after demolishing 26 garages in Diamedes Avenue and St Anne's Avenue.

Andrew McLuskey, campaigner and resident of Diamedes Avenue, said: "Given that there are 700 houses standing empty in Spelthorne it would seem obvious that no more are needed. "Even if they are needed they should not be built in such a way as to destroy the amenity of the neighbourhood in which they are placed.

"My neighbours and I have fought non stop against these repeated proposals. Each time we have trudged around the local houses gathering signatures for petitions, presented letters, and involved the local ombudsman, who is still considering the case."

Secure Storage Solutions Ltd put in a similar application in April last year and got it granted by the council, only to have it withdrawn after it was made clear that some residents were not notified of the application and the company had not correctly completed ownership certificates.

The new application is largely identical, but Mr McLuskey feels the application shouldn't go to the meeting until the ombudsman has made his verdict.

Concerning the first application, submitted by A2 Dominion, the proposal differs from the application rejected in November in that alterations have been made to the design and appearance to two of the blocks of flats.

If accepted, the flats will be built on Spelthorne's car park, a disused strip of land owned by Surrey County Council, and the village hall car park, which is administered by the Village Hall Council.

A2's plan is to use the flats to house residents temporarily while other homes in the village are demolished and replaced as part of multi-million pound regeneration scheme called Stanwell New Start, but campaigners feel there will be no parking spaces for village hall users.

Valeria Turner, chairwoman of Stanwell's Women's Institute, said: "I am worried at how early this has come up for review, and it is disgusting how they can re-submit an application that is no different from the last.

"I have a bad feeling we will lose this one."

We'd like to hear from you.
