Petition launched to try and save the role of Stanwell warden

A petition has been launched to try and stop the potential loss of Stanwell's community warden Mick Raynor.

The petition has been created by Vicki Kapoor Sood, a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator of Hadfield Road, who believes the town will suffer with the loss of his role, stating that Stanwell is becoming forgotten after the loss of Spelthorne crimed reduction officer Vic Smith last year.

And although Spelthorne Council is considering merging his role one of four new neighbourhood supervisors for the borough, they stated that certain aspects of his job might be cut.

Mrs Kapoor Sood said: "First it was Vic and now it is Mick, if this happens then crime really will rise in Stanwell. Last week there were a couple of burglaries in Hadfield Road alone, so if there is no one around in the town it will get worse.

"If Mick's role is merged then I'm sure certain parts of his job might be cut, which could be really important to certain people.

"According to last months crime report, crime is on the increase and we are being left in fear. We have fought long and hard as a partnership to keep our area safe from crime, and now all our experience and resources have been taken away from us and we are being left on our own."

Tim Kita, head of community safety at Spelthorne Council, said Mr Raynor is currently in consultation with the council over his possible new role, and stated that his role 'was never going to be axed.'

He said: "We hope to be able to come to a decision soon and hope to be able to merge the role. It may mean that certain parts of his role might be cut, but as we are in consultation we are not sure exactly what those will be."

Mr Kita said that a decision could be made by the end of the week.

Spencer Taylor, chairman of the Northlands' Estate Residents' Association, said: "It is nice to know that Mick is going to be in the area carrying out his role. A lot of people understand the financial pressures the council have at the moment, but I think the council should be wising up to the community and hopefully not cut too many aspects of his job."

We'd like to hear from you.
