Young Stanwell girls devastated by loss of pet rabbit

Two young girls have been left devastated after their beloved pet rabbit was stolen on Sunday January 24 and their missing poster was defaced by vandals.

Alexandra and Dominika Slotwinski, aged 16 and 14 respectively found their five-year-old pet Fudge missing in the afternoon of the day, in the back yard of their home in St Annes Avenue, Stanwell.

The girls believe the pet has been stolen, as they said it would have been near impossible for Fudge to escape due to the exterior lock on her hatch.

Alexandra said: "I don't understand why someone would want to steal a rabbit, maybe they felt it would make a good pet, or for more horrible circumstances such as animal cruelty. I am not sure what the worst thing is, but it is very scary."

The girls' suspicions of theft were increased when their mum's friend told them how her pet guinea pig went missing in similar circumstances from her home in Clare Road, Stanwell.

Alexandra said: "I believe someone broke in, because there is a special lock which cannot by opened from the inside, and she has never broken out before.

"Then we heard that a lady who my mum works with had her pet guinea pig stolen in a very similar way, so started to get suspicious.

The pet was bought for Dominika about five years ago, and the family have described how they feel.

Alexandra said: "It was devastating when we found her missing. We panicked and searched the area but for the first few days we were hoping she might come back to us.

"It is shocking because I am worried about how she is being treated. Maybe because of the credit crunch someone couldn't afford a pet, but if she is being treated badly or is hungry then it is very disturbing because she is so pampered.

"We'd like to emphasise that all we would like is Fudge back safe with us if possible. If somebody still has her, even if they may not wish to return her directly to us, we'd urge them to do so to an agency such as a vet's or pet shop who can contact us instead."

The animal theft is the the third reported incident of its kind in two months.

In early December last year, 15 canaries and a red bishop were stolen from a pensioner's home in Briar Road, Shepperton, and last week the News reported how Daniel Nicholls, from Ashford had his two miniature horses returned to him after they stolen from a Shepperton stable just after Christmas.
